Brina Kessel papers, 1951-1988.

The Brina Kessel Papers consist of materials documenting Dr. Kessel's career as an ornithologist in Alaska and as an educator, researcher, and administrator at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. They include records of the Alaska Ornithological Society and the Fairbanks Bird Club, two organizations in which Dr. Kessel has played a leading role, as well as information on biological studies associated with the Susitna Hydroelectric Project and a series of maps for a Northwest Alaskan Pipeline Company natural gas pipeline.

Ornithologist and educator Brina Kessel was born in Ithaca, New York, in 1925. She received her Ph.D. in ornithology from Cornell University in 1951 and in the summer of that year began her teaching career at the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines (now University of Alaska Fairbanks). Though best known for her scholarly work on birds and birding in Alaska, she also served in various administrative capacities at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and as curator of terrestrial vertebr...
